What is a Bio Active Substrate?

A Bio active substrate contains micro fauna and established bacteria that will break down any reptile poop deposited onto it! The main visible component of the substrate will be the spring tails that will congregate in damp areas, under dishes etc and make fast food of any lizard poop they come accross. 

Whats species is it suitable for?
Basically any humidity loving reptile or amphibian, it cant be used with desert species as if the substrate dries out it will die. It works best with smaller sized lizards as obviously they have smaller poo, but once you have a well established substrate it could cope with large snake waste.

How to set it up: You need a bag of the inactive medium which is a mix of all natural materials that create a perfect enviroment for the micro fauna to thrive and a 100g sachet of the active medium (soil with bugs in). All you do is set your viv up with the substrate - it needs to be 2-3" deep and sprinkle the active medium over the inactive substrate. Ideal ratio is 100g of active medium to 5 litres inactive substrate

How to maintain a Bio active substrate: 
Keep the substrate moist but not too damp, ideal conditions are moist, light and airy! so give it a mist spray daily and once a week give it a light mix with a spoon or similar implement! just to turn the soil over and mix in any larger pieces of uneaten waste.

Will It need replacing?
No once established if proper maintenance is kept up it will stay fresh and active.
