Well there are many lengthy and scientific answers to this question - but here it is in a nut shell!
When the sun hits your skin it creates Vitamin D3, your body takes the Vitamin D3 and uses it to process the calcium from your diet to give you strong healthy bones. Us being humans have plenty of sun exposure and can also obtain Vit D3 from other parts of our diet.
Reptiles do not get this, they must have access to a UVB light to create Vitamin D3, they must also have calcium supplemeted into their diet by dusting it onto their livefoods.
